Tulum vs Playa del Carmen — Which Is Better for Backpackers?
The Eternal Riviera Maya Debate
Every backpacker hitting the Riviera Maya faces this question: Tulum or Playa del Carmen? The honest answer? They're completely different vibes, and ideally you'd spend time in both. But if you have to choose, here's what you need to know.
The Vibe
Tulum is jungle, yoga, cenotes, and slow mornings. It attracts digital nomads, wellness seekers, and people who want to disconnect. The town is spread out — you'll want a bike.
Playa del Carmen is urban, social, and buzzing. Fifth Avenue is packed with restaurants, bars, and shops. It's walkable, lively, and has more of a city-beach energy.
Beaches
Tulum wins for raw beauty. The beach zone has powdery white sand and turquoise water backed by jungle. But beach clubs charge entry and the public access points are limited.
Playa has a long, wide public beach right in town. Less dramatic scenery, but way more accessible and free. You can literally walk from your hostel to the sand in minutes.
Nightlife
Playa del Carmen dominates here. Calle 12 is backpacker central with cheap drinks and live music. Clubs like Coco Bongo bring the party energy.
Tulum has a more chill nightlife scene — mezcal bars, bonfire gatherings, and occasional jungle parties. Less raging, more vibes.
Cost
Both are affordable by global standards, but Tulum's beach zone is expensive. The town center and La Veleta are where budget travelers should stay. Playa is generally a bit cheaper for food and drinks.
| Category | Tulum | Playa del Carmen |
| Dorm bed | $15-20 USD | $15-22 USD |
| Street food meal | $3-5 USD | $3-5 USD |
| Beer | $2-4 USD | $2-3 USD |
| Cenote entry | $5-15 USD | $3-10 USD |
The Verdict
Come to Tulum if you want nature, cenotes, and a slower pace. Come to Playa if you want nightlife, easy beach access, and a social scene. Come to both if you have the time — they're only an hour apart by colectivo ($2 USD).
Where We Stay
We'll be honest — we love both. Maui Tulum is our jungle base in La Veleta, surrounded by nature and a short bike ride from everything. Maui Playa del Carmen puts you a block from the beach with a rooftop pool. Both have free breakfast and are built for backpackers who want community without the party-hostel chaos.
