7 Best Cenotes in the Riviera Maya — A Backpacker's Guide
Why Cenotes Are a Must in the Riviera Maya
If you're backpacking through Mexico's Caribbean coast, cenotes are non-negotiable. These natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water are scattered across the Yucatán Peninsula, and the Riviera Maya has some of the best.
1. Gran Cenote — Tulum
The most popular cenote near Tulum, and for good reason. Crystal-clear water, turtles, and easy bike access from town. Go early to avoid the crowds. Entry is around 500 MXN.
2. Cenote Dos Ojos — Tulum
Two connected caves with insane visibility. Snorkeling here feels like floating in another world. A bit pricier but absolutely worth it for the experience.
3. Cenote Azul — Playa del Carmen
A huge open-air cenote just south of Playa del Carmen on the highway. Great for cliff jumping and swimming. Very budget-friendly at around 200 MXN.
4. Cenote Cristalino — Playa del Carmen
Right next to Cenote Azul, this one is smaller and more intimate. Perfect for a quiet swim. You can easily hit both in one morning.
5. Cenote Suytun — Valladolid
Worth the day trip from Tulum. The single beam of light hitting the platform in the center of the cave is one of the most iconic sights in all of Mexico.
6. Cenote Calavera — Tulum
Also called the "Temple of Doom" — you jump through holes in the ground into the water below. Not for the faint-hearted, but the adrenaline rush is real.
7. Casa Cenote — Tulum
An open cenote that connects to the ocean. Mangroves, fish, and sometimes even manatees. Great for a chill afternoon.
Budget Tips
- Rent a bike in Tulum to reach Gran Cenote and Calavera for free (no taxi needed).
- Visit cenotes in the morning — fewer people, better light for photos.
- Bring your own snorkel gear to save on rental fees.
- Many cenotes require you to shower before entering (no sunscreen allowed — it damages the ecosystem).
Where to Stay
If you're cenote-hopping around Tulum, staying somewhere central like Maui Tulum in La Veleta puts you within biking distance of several cenotes. They also help organize cenote tours at solid backpacker prices. For cenotes near Playa del Carmen, Maui Playa del Carmen is a block from the beach and the ADO bus station — making day trips easy.
