Maui Hostels Travel Scholarship 2026
We're awarding $500 USD to one student who writes the most inspiring essay on sustainable travel, cultural exchange, or the value of backpacking as a form of education.
Who can apply
- Currently enrolled in a college, university, or accredited program (anywhere in the world).
- Aged 18 or older.
- Able to submit the essay in English or Spanish.
Essay prompt
Pick one (800–1,200 words):
- How can backpacker travel become more sustainable for local communities like Tulum and Playa del Carmen?
- Describe a travel experience that changed the way you see the world.
- Why hostel culture matters in 2026 — the social, economic, and cultural case.
How to apply

- Your full name and country.
- Proof of enrollment (student ID photo or letter).
- Essay as a PDF attachment.
- Subject line: Scholarship Application 2026.
Deadlines
- Submission deadline: December 31, 2026
- Winner announced: January 31, 2027 (on this page + by email)
- Prize paid: via PayPal or bank transfer within 14 days

- Originality and depth of thought (40%)
- Quality of writing (30%)
- Relevance to sustainable / cultural travel (30%)
